Educator's and Trainer's Pre-conference Day
Tuesday, October 9, 2012
Tenth Triennial
International Child and
Youth Care Conference
Co-chairs for the Day: Carol Stuart and James Freeman

The Pre-conference day will begin with presentations designed to update participants on educational accreditation
and on professional certification by the Child and Youth Care Educational Accreditation board (CYCEAB) of Canada
and the Child and Youth Care Certification Board (CYCCB). Following these updates participants will choose one of
two streams and will participate in issues based discussion about these initiatives. Participants will be able to
choose 2 different discussion sessions over the day and will return to a plenary session at the end of the day
which summarizes the discussions and next steps for both certification and educational accreditation.

Accreditation Stream

The accreditation stream of the Educator and Trainer’s preconference day will focus on how the work of the CYC
Educational Accreditation Board can serve to enhance the quality of educational activities for Child and Youth Care.
The Board has proposed a model of Accreditation which is nested within the regular program review process
undergone by all post-secondary institutions in Canada. Participants will inform the next steps of the Accreditation
Board and contribute to our research about how accreditation is viewed by the field and accordingly what the
essential next steps are. Sessions throughout the day will focus discussion on: a) The types of data available
through program review; b) Methods for reducing the costs of accreditation; c) The quality improvement process
embedded in program review and accreditation; and d) How best to measure the Accreditation standards.

Certification Stream

The certification stream of the Educator and Trainer's pre-conference is designed for trainers, program managers,
and practitioners interested in learning more about the Child and Youth Care Certification Board (CYCCB) model of
certification as an outcome of the North American Certification Project and it’s role in increasing resiliency in Child
and Youth Care practitioners. Participants will contribute to the ongoing development of certification efforts
through rotating small group discussions on four specific topics: a) understanding the CYCCB certification process;
b) identifying evidence-based measurement strategies; c) assessing the relevance of certification standards; and
d) identifying how certification relates to systems interventions and organization development.
