In the middle of the winter the Nova Scotia Child and Youth Care
Workers Association sent an email to its members and other Child and
Youth Care Workers in our formal and informal networks, asking for
input regarding a provincial conference. The result of that Internet poll
was actualized May 5 &6, 2011 at the NSCC Truro Campus.
The theme of this year’s conference – REVIVING OUR YOUTH, HEART
MIND AND SOUL was selected by Child and Youth Care workers from
across Nova Scotia. The keynote and end note speakers were also
chosen by Child and Youth Care Workers. It was the hope of the
conference planning committee that the Workers present would
experience the conference as connecting to them directly.
International Child and Youth Care week should be a time to celebrate
the meaningful yet often difficult work we do. Over the two days of
Provincial conference Child and Youth Care Workers had the
opportunity to be nourished heart, mind and soul. They had the
opportunity to socialize and network with Child and Youth Care Workers
from across the province; to share good food at a banquet and brunch;
to hang out and relax together over coffee break and to share a cold
beverage, to dance and sing together at a social.
They also had the opportunity to hear from and participate in a number
of workshops about health, wellness and spirituality as it connects
directly to the work that they do.
During the Conference, President Kelly Shaw of the NSCYCWA,
presented Central Regional Director Lisa Giles with a Lifetime
Membership Award on behalf of Garth Goodwin, who was not able to
attend the Conference this year. Garth was recognized for his
outstanding, long-term contributions to the Association and its
membership by keeping the NSCYCWA in tip top shape and for striving
for Youth Care Excellence. Garth will be receiving his Award from Kelly
at the next Canadian Council Meeting.
The Nova Scotia Child and Youth Care Association received donations
from organizations and government departments who educate, employ
and support Child and Youth Care Workers:
- NSCC Truro Campus who allow us year after year to return and
take advantage of their tremendous facilities for our entire
conference including residence and banquet facilities.
- Success College who offered us funds which were used to
bring Thom Garfat PhD as keynote presenter.
- Phoenix Youth Programs who, as a way of celebrating Child and
Youth Care Workers within their organization and across the
province are provided lunch for everyone.
- The Department of Community Services who recently
became one of the largest employers of child and youth care
workers in the province provided the nutrition break for the
afternoon.
- The New Brunswick Child and Youth Care Association. Our
partners to the north have generously provided snack fantastic
granny smith apples at the registration table.
- Inglis Jewellers provided two Child and Youth Care Rings
which were given as prizes at the banquet. Very excited winners
were – Marcy O’Keefe (NSCC Truro Campus) and Tina Gauvin
(Acting President Child and Youth Care Association of New
Brunswick).
- And the Prince Edward Island Child and Youth Care
Association who sponsored the entertainment at the evening
social.
Feedback from the 85 Child and Youth Care Workers who attended
was resoundingly positive and we are already thinking about what we
will do next year.
Much appreciation is given to all those who attended and supported the
Reviving our Youth: Heart, Mind and Soul Conference of 2011.
Sincerely,
The Nova Scotia Child and Youth Care Workers Association
