Call for Papers
The conference theme is “Inspiring Resiliency, building the capacity for resiliency in ourselves, our children, youth
and families and in our communities”. The field of Child and Youth Care has a long history of working with those
who have experienced trauma and adversity in their lives. Often we ourselves also experience adversity or trauma
in our work and personal lives. How do we deal with our own stress, adversity and trauma? How do we help
others who suffer significant trauma and loss in their lives?
Child and youth care work requires resilience of its practitioners and tasks them to build the same capacity in those
with whom we work. This capacity for resiliency significantly improves ones ability to face challenges and
successfully overcome them. It is acquired through self awareness, personal growth, self care and life-long
learning. Resiliency factors such as meaningful relationships, pro-social skills and self-care build capacity in a
person or group of people to successfully persevere through misfortune, hardships and trauma.
Much of our work in Child and Youth Care requires that we provide effective, trauma-informed care. Each day is a
challenge and an inspiration. We invite you to share your stories and practices of building resiliency with us in
Canmore at the 2012 International Child and Youth Care Conference. We request that presenters consider a
trauma informed/resiliency perspective to their proposal. Other topics to consider are evidence-based practice,
innovative approaches to treatment, management of self-care for staff, topics related to mental health and
treatment of mental health issues, family work and working with Aboriginals or other diverse populations.
